Why Being a Family-Owned Business Matters

JANUARY 2, 2018 by

When people choose a business to work with, they may not always consider the business's history or background before they make their decision. However, it's super important for consumers to think about any given company's values, motivators, and qualifications-not just the low price or speed of their services. This is especially true when it comes to small, local businesses that offer a satisfying alternative to impersonal corporations.

Advantage Disposal is a prime example. We're a family-owned and locally operated business with an impressive history in the Schenectady area. As a waste collection company, we compete with the big guys on a regular basis and have actually managed to maintain an edge against them. How? By staying true to the strong, core values that are the bedrock of our company.

Family Tradition of Excellence
You see, our history as a family-owned operation goes all the way back to 1959, which is when the family business was first established. Our owner's father ran the original business, so our owner grew up working alongside him for years. During that time, he learned invaluable lessons about hard work, integrity, responsibility, and professionalism. In 1987, our owner finally branched out and started his own business, which then morphed into Advantage Disposal.

Our family history taught us to go the extra mile for our customers and to take care of our local community. For example, we happily make unique accommodations for our elderly and special needs customers who have difficulty moving their trash cans on their own.

Moreover, as part of our old-fashioned service, we do all of our trash pickups the traditional way: by hand. Those corporate waste collection companies use mechanical arms as a time- and money-saving measure, but the fact remains these mechanical arms are bad for customers. They're imprecise and always seem to miss the truck, which means trash items are usually left scattered around lawns and driveways.

On top of all that, we're also actively involved in local charities and community organizations.

Family-Owned Means Top Notch
So, what's the takeaway here? A company's history matters. When it's a local, family-owned business, you're likely to receive much better quality and service. It's that simple. Advantage Disposal is proof!

The Top 5 Benefits of Recycling

DECEMBER 20, 2017 by

Are you already in the habit of sorting out your recyclables every week? Or, are you someone who needs an extra push to make the effort? Regardless of which camp you fall into, you should know how beneficial recycling can be not only to our environment, but to our economy, as well. Whether it keeps you in the practice of recycling on a regular basis or changes your mind regarding the importance of recycling, this knowledge is something every citizen should have.

So, without further ado, let's take a look at some of the top benefits of recycling!

  • Recycling protects the environment. That's because recycling decreases how often we need to extract, refine, and process raw materials. In other words, recycling reduces the need for mining, quarrying, logging, oil refining, and all other processes that produce substantial pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Recycling conserves natural resources. By reusing materials and turning them into new products, we reduce the need for consumption of new resources, like timber, water, and minerals. This means we don't have to strip the Earth of as many raw materials.
  • Recycling lowers the use of landfills. Because recycled materials are turned into new products instead of tossed in the trash, the overall amount of waste that ends up in landfills is reduced. As we know, landfills contribute to a substantial amount of air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Recycling saves energy. Even though some energy is consumed in the process of recycling materials and converting them into new products, it's still not as much as the energy wasted in extracting, manufacturing, and transporting brand-new materials.
  • Recycling supports American manufacturing. By recycling materials locally, we conserve our own natural resources and support the manufacturers that turn recycled materials into new products. Recycling also serves as a way of tapping into a domestic source of materials, as opposed to importing them.
And, of course, the benefits don't stop there! Hopefully, this post illustrates how beneficial and vital recycling is for our environment and economy.

Plus, you may be happy to discover that Advantage Disposal makes it super-easy to recycle! We use single-stream recycling, which means you don't even have to separate your recyclables into different categories. We also include a recycling bin for FREE with our regular trash pickups! Give us a call if you'd like to know more.

Our Commercial Trash Collection Service Is Ideal for Small Businesses

NOVEMBER 13, 2017 by

Are you a business owner or landlord frustrated with the fact that your only option for commercial trash disposal seems to involve a huge, expensive dumpster in your parking lot? At Advantage Disposal, we hear this complaint from local, small business owners a lot.

For slighter operations like yours, the likelihood of you actually creating enough garbage to warrant such a heavy-duty, high-volume dumpster is minuscule. But what other options do you have?

Well, Advantage Disposal, for starters!

Affordable Alternative to Dumpsters

We provide light, commercial waste collection services throughout the Schenectady area. They're ideally suited for small businesses and apartment buildings that create more garbage than a single household, but not enough to fill a massive dumpster. Instead of a dumpster, you can use average-size trash cans and recycling bins, and we'll come pick them up as part of our routine service. Trash cans take up much less space on your property, and best of all, they're much more affordable!

As with all of our other waste collection services, our commercial trash pickup service comes with unbeatable customer service. We go above and beyond, accommodating special requests whenever possible. Plus, we always do our pickups by hand-not with a mechanical arm attached to the truck-because this ensures all the trash actually makes it into the truck, instead of scattered across the ground.

So, if you're like Goldilocks looking for a commercial garbage option that's not too big and not too small, your search ends here. Advantage Disposal's light commercial waste service is "just right." Give us a call today to learn more!

When Should You Take Your Trash Can to the Curb?

OCTOBER 31, 2017 by

Forgetting to take your trash can out to the curb for pickup is a bummer. It always seems to happen on those weeks when the can is mostly full, and then you have to spend the next week trying to fit everything in.

In order to avoid this issue, the waste removal pros at Advantage Disposal suggest taking your can out to the curb the evening before your trash pickup day. This way, you avoid the risk of forgetting to take out the trash can before the garbage truck comes along. Plus, you'll start the next day with one thing already crossed off your to-do list!

If you do happen to forget to bring your can to the street the night before, don't panic! At Advantage Disposal, our crew drives the same route each week. This means that we will come by your house at about the same time on every trash pickup day. As long as you are able to get the can out before we arrive, we will be happy to take the trash off your hands.

We are proud to serve customers in Schenectady and the surrounding region. Our aim is to provide exceptional waste removal services as well as personalized and personable customer care.

If you ever have questions about our commercial and residential trash collection service, schedules, or routes, please give us a call. We love having the chance to speak with you, and we will be more than happy to provide additional information or advice.

Need to Ditch Large Household Items? Schedule Bulk Trash Pickup!

OCTOBER 26, 2017 by

How do you get rid of a large item such as a mattress, couch, or television? You call in Advantage Disposal! While many garbage collection services don't have the space or manpower to handle large items, we can help you deal with oversized trash. Let our pros haul away your garbage, large and small!

Our bulk removal pros have the equipment, knowledge, and staff to quickly and safely remove large unwanted items from your property. We can cart away the aforementioned mattresses, couches, and televisions, as well as other furniture, drywall and construction debris, and anything else that's too big, awkward, or heavy to go out as part of your regular trash.

We're proud to offer bulk trash removal in addition to our regular garbage and recycling collection. You just have to call, let us know what type of item(s) you have, and schedule an appointment for pickup. We typically provide bulk item pickup on Wednesdays.

When you make an appointment for pickup, we will quote you a price based on the description you give of the size, weight, shape, and amount of your bulk items. That price can be subject to change if our onsite assessment of the items differs from the original description provided. If that happens, though, we'll always consult with you to make sure you're on board with any change in price before we haul the items away.

So, if you have larger-than-usual trash that needs to be removed in Schenectady or the surrounding area, call Advantage Disposal today! Our bulk removal service will haul away unwanted items so they're off your curb and out of your hair.

Do You Know How to Get Rid of Your Old Computer?

SEPTEMBER 19, 2017 by

Did you know that as of January 1, 2015, it's no longer legal to put old electronics in the trash? That means that computers, TVs, and even VCRs must be recycled rather than tossed in the landfill. This regulation was put in place to reduce pollution from components utilizing lead, mercury, and other dangerous toxins as well as to conserve natural resources.

But if you're a consumer needing to dispose of an old computer, this law can leave you feeling like you're in a tight spot. How can you get rid of that outdated PC?

There are actually two easy options:

  • Use a manufacturer's takeback program. Electronic equipment manufacturers registered with the state are required to provide free information regarding how to recycle your electronics.
  • Take your computer or other device to a electronic waste collection site. You can find a list of registered NYS electronic waste collection sites here. These sites accept electronic waste, but double-check that they accept the specific item you are needing to dispose of. For example, some sites may take DVD players but not cathode ray TVs.
Advantage Disposal is unable to accept electronic waste at this time, but we are happy to provide you with this handy resource to help you dispose of your old computers, TVs, and other equipment safely and legally. Just ask if you have any further questions.

Trash Collection Is the Family Business

AUGUST 7, 2017 by

You could say that trash collection is in our blood! Our family first got into providing trash pickup service in 1959. Advantage Disposal's owner grew up working alongside his father in the family garbage collection business. In 1987, he started his own company, and in 2008, he changed its name to Advantage Disposal.

With roots going back nearly 60 years, it's no wonder that we have developed a reputation for using our old-fashioned work ethic to provide our customers with outstanding service. Single-Stream Recycling Makes Your Life Easier

JULY 26, 2017 by

Single-stream recycling means you can recycle glass, cans, plastic, cardboard, and paper all in one container. That means no sorting, and no hassle. At Advantage Disposal, we maximize your convenience by providing our clients with single-stream recycling containers. If it's recyclable, just toss it in and we'll haul it away! Our goal is to make recycling as easy and straightforward as possible for our customers.

Please be aware that while some types of styrofoam can technically be recycled, we cannot accept them in our recycling containers. Unfortunately, none of the area recycling processing facilities take styrofoam in this part of the country, so we are unable to accept this material.

Also, note that plastic bags and films cannot be included in single-stream recycling. That's because these items can easily become tangled in the mechanical sorting equipment used to separate items at the recycling processing facility. This jams the equipment and can be quite problematic. As a result, we request that customers NOT bag/sort their different items. To recycle plastic bags, please drop them off at your local grocery store.

If you have any other questions or concerns about what-and what not-to include in your single-stream recycling bin, please don't hesitate to ask. Advantage Disposal is happy to help in any way we can. Just give us a call!

Our Trash Pickup Service Goes Above and Beyond

JULY 14, 2017 by

At Advantage Disposal, we do a whole lot more than just get the job done. When it comes to your residential or commercial waste collection, we are committed to not only effectively removing your trash but to also providing you with truly exceptional service along the way. We've been proudly serving Schenectady since 2008, and our team is dedicated to going above and beyond for every customer!

Here are just a few examples of the ways Advantage Disposal goes the extra mile for you:

Back door service. We can come straight to your door to pick up your trash if you are unable to put your can out at the curb yourself. For customers who are elderly or disabled, we are happy to help by removing the challenge of maneuvering your waste container to the curb. Just ask about this option when you call.

  • No special trash can placement. Unlike trash collection companies that have very specific rules about where you can and cannot place your container, Advantage Disposal can empty your container no matter where along the curb you place it. Our goal is to make our trash service as convenient as possible for you.
  • Yard waste and bulk item removal. We are proud to be able to help with seasonal yard waste and even bulk item removal. We pick up yard debris on Wednesdays April through November and can remove bigger items such as mattresses and couches upon request (additional fees may apply).
  • Special requests. We are committed to accommodating special requests if at all possible. If you have any sort of special trash removal need, please do not hesitate to ask. We will work to be of service in any way we can.
So why settle for less when it comes to your waste collection company? Call Advantage Disposal for the customer service you truly deserve!

Major Projects Call for Dumpster Rental

JULY 7, 2017 by

Advantage Disposal proudly offers bulk trash pickup for large or heavy items. A dumpster offers you the space you need to haul away large volumes of debris and unwanted items in the most convenient way possible.

The great news is, that while Advantage Disposal does not provide dumpsters for rent, our sister company Jim's Roll Off Services does! That means you get the same friendly service and the same top-quality results as well as the space you need to tackle your major project.

Jim's Roll Off Services has several dumpster rental sizes available, including:

  • 10-yard
  • 12-yard

Our Hassle-Free Trash Can Placement Rules

JUNE 19, 2017 by

Putting out your trash can for collection shouldn't be complicated! But with some residential garbage companies, getting the can in the right spot can be a major hassle.

That's because they use trucks with robotic arms to pick up your trash can, and the containers must be precisely placed for the process to work. But have you ever read the trash can placement requirements of other garbage collection companies? They often go something like this: Place your trash can x feet away from the curb within y distance of the road with a minimum distance of z feet from buildings and cars with no overhanging trees or power lines. What a pain!

At Advantage Disposal, we make it easy. You can simply place your can at the curb-anywhere at the curb-and our team will pick up it. That's because we provide trash pickup services the old-fashioned way: by hand. A team member will wheel your trash can to the truck and attach it to the hydraulic lift system. After the can is dumped, we'll wheel it right back to the curb where we found it. You don't have to follow any special rules when putting your trash can at the curb, and we'll always replace the can(s) neatly side by side.

We want to make getting rid of your trash as easy as possible. Let the Advantage Disposal Team take care of you. Call now to get started!

Are Batteries Recyclable?

JUNE 12, 2017 by

We often get asked whether batteries are recyclable. Unfortunately, the answer is a little more complicated than a simple "yes" or "no."

Yes, some batteries are recyclable.

No, we cannot accept them in our single-stream recycling containers.

Because many batteries contain hazardous materials, Advantage Disposal cannot accept these items. However, it is important to us that we help our customers stay safe from these chemicals, and we are committed to helping make environmentally friendly choices as easy as possible for you. That's why we've compiled this list below to help you safely dispose of batteries.

  • Rechargeable batteries can be returned to any retailer who sells rechargeable batteries.
  • Automotive batteries can be returned to the parts store or service center when a new battery is purchased.
  • Alkaline batteries (normal, non-rechargeable household batteries) can typically be thrown away safely. If you would like to recycle these types of batteries, some commercial recycling facilities may accept them for a small fee.
If you have other questions about battery recycling or you would like information about local facilities that accept particular types of batteries, the Schenectady County Yard Waste Composting Facility and Resident Recycling Center in Glenville can provide you with up-to-date information.

Large Item Pickup

JUNE 7, 2017 by

Need to get rid of an old couch? Trying to dispose of mattresses? Ready to pitch that old dishwasher? When you have large, bulky items to throw away, getting rid of them can be quite the challenge. The good news is that Advantage Disposal offers bulk item pickup services in addition to our routine trash collection. That means you don't have to borrow a truck to haul away that old furniture and you won't have to risk throwing out your back to get that appliance to the dump. Our team makes getting rid of even the largest, most awkward items a breeze!

Advantage Disposal offers large item pickup once per week, usually on Wednesdays. Please schedule your pickup in advance by calling our office at (518) 355-6615. Pricing on large item pickup varies depending on what it is you need to dispose of, so you can learn about your costs as well as schedule your pickup when you call.

Please be aware that prices are subject to change once we see the actual items in question. Sometimes people tend to underestimate the size of their oversized items, and that can impact cost. For your peace of mind, we will always contact you regarding any price increase to get your okay before we remove the item.

Have questions? Need to schedule bulk item removal? Just pick up the phone. Advantage Disposal is standing by to help!

If you don't routinely have enough trash to warrant getting a commercial dumpster, we can help you. What Size Trash Can Is Right for My Family?

APRIL 28, 2017 by

Wondering what size trash can is appropriate for your family's needs? We can help! Don't just guess what size container you need for your residential trash collection. You could end up with an overflowing bin or one that's way too roomy. Check out our handy guide instead to make an educated decision.

Advantage Disposal offers three container sizes for your garbage pickup. Choose a:

  • 35-gallon container: These cans will hold approximately 2-3 tall kitchen bags.
  • 65-gallon container: These cans will hold approximately 4-5 tall kitchen bags.
  • 95-gallon container: These cans will hold approximately 6-8 tall kitchen bags.
Think about your family's usual trash routine. Do you take out the trash multiple times per week? Do you end up with several garbage bags packed to the brim? Do you have just one or two trash bags most weeks? Based on your usual trash output, you can determine if you need a smaller container (35 gallons) or a larger container (95 gallons).

And remember, for large families that need even more space, an extra container is "only" $10 per month.

If you still have questions about what size container is right for your needs, don't hesitate to call. The Advantage Disposal team is here to help!

Yard Debris Collection Started April 12

APRIL 13, 2017 by

Starting April 12, Advantage Disposal's annual yard waste pickup services are now available. We provide this service to local customers who live in municipalities that do not provide routine collection.

Our goal is to help you with spring cleanouts, summer maintenance chores, and fall leaves by providing lawn and garden waste removal from April 12 through Thanksgiving. We can pick up bundled branches (shorter than four feet long) that weigh less than 40 pounds. However, all weeds, leaves, and grass must be bagged in a biodegradable paper bag. We can only accept bagged yard debris that weighs less than 40 pounds.

Please be aware that while there are some plastic yard waste bags that are labeled as biodegradable, we cannot accept yard waste in any type of plastic bag. Unfortunately, none of the local transfer stations take biodegradable plastic bags, so we are also unable to accept them. We apologize for any inconvenience.

We pick up yard waste on Wednesdays; call to get started!

Please follow these regulations when putting out your lawn and garden waste for pickup.

  • Yard waste pickup is offered from April 12 through Thanksgiving Day.

Our Holiday Pickup Policy Is Designed to Meet Your Needs

MARCH 7, 2017 by

At Advantage Disposal, we believe that your garbage collection service should be focused on meeting your needs. As a result, we don't just leave you high and dry when we observe a national holiday. Unlike residential garbage pickup companies that don't show up until the following week, we'll be there on the next business day. That means you can count on us for garbage removal that never lets the trash just pile up!

Here's how it works.

Advantage Disposal observes national holidays, including:

  • New Year's Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Fourth of July
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving
  • Christmas
We don't pick up on those days. But instead of making you wait or just leaving you guessing about when we'll be by to pick up your trash, we bring you peace of mind with our reliable routine. After we observe a national holiday, we will always provide garbage pickup on the next business day.

Don't settle for a residential garbage service that runs their trucks the day before a holiday, but doesn't bother to tell you that's your modified pickup day. Don't just resign yourself to jamming two weeks of trash into your container. Rely on Advantage Disposal for regular garbage pickup, and get the customer service you deserve. We'll be there on your scheduled collection day-or the day after, for national holidays. Call now to learn more.

Safely Dispose of Your Hazardous Waste

FEBRUARY 23, 2017 by

Recycling, when applicable, and safely disposing of hazardous waste go hand-in-hand when it comes to protecting the environment. Our last blog post reviewed what materials can be recycled, so today we're going to tackle what needs to be done with hazardous items. We get lots of questions about disposing of hazardous substances, so here are the basics.

Not sure what trash is considered "hazardous"? Many common household items are hazardous as waste and should not be included in your normal trash container. The following everyday items must be kept separate for disposal:

  • Tires
  • Batteries
  • Refrigerators and appliances
  • Paint (liquid)
  • Other chemicals
Advantage Disposal is not licensed to handle this type of waste, so we cannot accept these materials as part of our routine trash pickup services. Please do your part to protect our planet by not including any of these hazardous items in your container for garbage collection.

Residents of Schenectady County may be able to dispose of those items via the Schenectady County Yard Waste Composting Facility and Resident Recycling Center in Glenville. Please visit their website for details.

What Is Recyclable?

FEBRUARY 15, 2017 by

At Advantage Disposal, we often receive questions about what items are and are not recyclable, so we wanted to provide a little more information on what should (and shouldn't) go into your residential recycling bins.

The following items ARE recyclable and can be included in your single-stream recycling bin:

  • Mixed glass
  • Paper
  • Cardboard
  • Aluminum cans
  • Tin cans
The following items are NOT recyclable:
  • Plastic bags
  • PVC pipes
  • Audio & VHS cassettes
  • Ceramics
  • Clothing/textiles
  • Anything compostable
Many environmentally conscious people opt to include questionable items in their recycling bins, thinking that the item might be recyclable and if it's not, it can just get sorted out at the processing facility. However, this is not the best approach! That's because including non-recyclable items isn't harmless. For example, plastic bags can get caught in the machinery used for sorting single-stream recycling, leading to jams, and food can attract insects and vermin. We appreciate your desire to recycle everything possible, but your best bet is to stick to items included on the "are recyclable" list above. This helps ensure the process is as efficient and effective as possible, maximizing the environmental benefits of recycling.

Still have questions about whether an item is recyclable? Just give us a call! The Advantage Disposal team is here to help.
